Sabino Canyon in the Coronado National Forest

Throughout Southern Arizona the peaks of the mountain ranges are referred to as "Sky Islands".  These locations begin in the hot, dry Sonoran desert and peak out in pine forests.  One can drive from Mexico (desert lands) to Canada (pine forests) in just a few miles....all the way UP HILL to 7,000+ feet.

We hiked the base of one of the Sky Islands in the Tucson area:  Sabino Canyon at the base of Mount Lemmon.  Want to ski in Tucson:  drive up to the top of Mount Lemmon.  NOT kidding!

Sabino Canyon is part of the drainage system from the mountain and lovely creeks run down and through the canyons.  We hiked up Bear Canyon--crisscrossing the creek several times.  We turned back before "7 Falls" -- too far for a leisurely afternoon walk in the desert!

Running water in Bear Canyon.  Check out that cactus forest!

Early wildflower -- rumor says this is warmest winter in past couple of years.
