The Montaro was too big and heavy to tow; it also would have required some work under the hood to make it tow-friendly. And with 208,000 miles we were not putting another dime into that beast. So we have been "tandem" driving since last August. Not so much fun...
We looked and looked. Walked the various RV parks and looked at other tows. Read various internet sites. And quickly figured out the Honda CRV was the best option. No restrictions towing 4 down; only 1 fuse to pull while underway. Light enough, high clearance, and designed to last forever. So a used Honda CRV was our goal. New might be nice, but not this time!
Yikes. Car dealers, private parties, Craigs List....and more. It was amazing to us how much information was floating around out on the internet. We tried a couple of CraigsList ads. I can not for the life of me figure out why someone would place an ad and not respond to inquires? Or respond and say: "I'm traveling for awhile. Maybe later." So we ended up at a dealer.
Did a first round via the internet; showed up and within an hour or two owned a new car! And the best news--they took the Montaro as a trade in. We so did not want to have to do a private party sale with that beloved beast and the ever present "check engine light" glowing. (Um, 1 of 3 catalytic convertors needed replacing for about 2 years now).
From the car dealer we drove to an RV service place and bought all the toys needed to actually TOW a car behind Bessie. Plate for the car, hitch for the RV, brake system for the car, blah blah blah. Before we leave Tucson we will be all fixed up and ready for a summer season on the road!
So now we are trying to figure out what to call our new 2007 Honda CRV EXL! Ideas anyone??
Our towed needs a name???? |
Nice car. Terri really loves hers. Which is a little bit newer then yours actually. From the photo and having seen a few others looks like about same size. What does needed brakes mean? When you are towing are you not just pulling it - free wheel? You actually would use the car's brakes?
ReplyDeleteGreat car! Is it blue? If so, I would call her "Blue Belle". Sort of southern, flowery, and oh yeah, a great ice cream!
