A shrine in the Black Hills -- such was Gutzon Borglum's vision for Mount Rushmore. He sought a formal rendering of the philosophy of our government into granite on a mountain peak. He choose to give human form to the abstract and choose four key presidents to enshrine:
George Washington, Birth of our Nation
Thomas Jefferson, Expansion of our Nation
Abraham Lincoln, Preservation of our Nation
Theodore Roosevelt, Development of our Nation
We walked the trails, marveled at the technical challenges for the carvers, and left renewed in a way that surprised us.
