The Virgin of Guadalupe

Today, December 12, is one of the most revered days in Mexico:  The Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
Anyone familiar with Mexico will remember seeing her portrait throughout the country, on roadside shrines, wall paintings, candles, car stickers, everywhere.  She is, in many ways, the "Mary" of this country but a brown Mary -- none of that blond hair and blue eyes European Mary here.

Today is not a national holiday but many shops, offices, and schools were closed.  Family celebrations begin late this evening and continue throughout the holiday period.
