Another day on the bus...this time a slick & professional bus service to Chao Doc--the last big city in Vietnam until the border. The road followed the river and it went up and down and up and down over hundreds of small creeks and channels. The towns got dustier and smaller but still vibrant and full of markets and shops and motorbikes.
One funny story. TET is about 3 weeks away and everyone is getting ready. Mostly that means buying home decorations (red and gold banners) and plants/trees. Amazing flowering plants are showing up in the small stands. So in Can Tho the main road along the Mekong is a wide boulevard; at least wide enough for 2 lanes of traffic and pedestrians (since the sidewalks have cafes & food stalls and motorbike parking.) Well, in order to have a "flower mall" they put a strip of booths in the middle of the street!! So to shop for flowers (or fully grown trees) you walk into the middle of the road from either side. And now the traffic is really congested and there are even more pedestrians who want to buy flowers. Laugh.

One isolated hamlet near Chau Doc is Muslim (they fled to Malaysia during the American War) She is making coconut pancakes -- one per pan. |
